Venice, perhaps the most depicted, described, imagined and critiqued city in the world, presents contemporary artists with ethical as well as aesthetic dilemmas. It cannot just be ‘pictured’ as uniquely beautiful, responses must be made to the effects of climate change, tourism, depopulation, to its many histories and its role as a mirror of an ever changing world.
